As a field, who are we? They get a cookie, and leave their desks for 15 minutes, interact with colleagues from outside their silo, and I get a bit more insight as we build our audience engagement plan. As as Katie Eagleton brought up, who is this definition for? People can only define museums on what we have now.

Who are We Protecting?

A colleague of mine helpfully added: "who are you protecting them from?" Loyal patrons don't need protection--even if they may be the people who gave us those artifacts. When the MAH was changing aggressively, we embraced Elaine Heumann Gurian's idea of "the museum of and." We didn't want to reject some people and anoint others.
