The Giving Challenge is not focused on how much money you can raise, but on how successful you are at getting people to donate to your cause. Feeding America is the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization. Feeding America engaged Beaconfire to help them develop a knowledge management strategy and redesign their Intranet. Feeding America needed a new site and system that would allow them to promote 2-way communications and knowledge sharing between national staff and network members. This saved Feeding America time and money by limiting the scope of customization needed during development.

One of the best things about the commute is Virgin America airlines in flight experience. Miro Logo. Since March, I've been commuting between Boston and San Francisco. The food is decent, the is leg room in economy, it's clean, and there is wifi. But the wifi isn't the best part, everytime I fly I end up meeting folks who work in social media. Last night, there was a couple setting next to me who once airborne, opened their laptops and started talking.

This is their second online competition that encouraged people to leverage their social networks to raise money and awareness and recruit supporters for the causes they care about most. Allison and I wrote the reflection paper for the first challenge. This year we took a more intercative approach to sharing the findings and learnings.

Earlier this month, I went to a conference that renewed my faith in conferences. I first sensed the difference at the front door. There wasn't one. Instead, I walked into a lush garden in the middle of the city. Courageous speakers from dozens of countries described bold, participatory projects. Birds flew through the proceedings.

The Nonprofit Finance Fund just published a survey on how the economic downturn is affecting nonprofits’ current and long-term finances. Their conclusions are scary. According to the executive summary, Only 12% expect to operate above break-even this year. Just 16% anticipate being able to cover their operating expenses in both 2009 and 2010. 31% don’t have enough operating cash in hand to cover more that one month of expenses, and another 31% have less than three months’ worth.

A minute later I noticed Pistachio's tweet about flying Virgin America from Boston and Glenn Stratchan direct messaged me asking what seat I was in because he thought we might be on the same Virgin America flight. .

Steve Cisler heard me mention this book recently and sent me a spot-on article from the Observer, How America is betraying the hungry children of Africa. One of the things I often talk about in my public speaking is the continuum that goes from pure profit orientation to pure charity. Most social entrepreneurs I know operate somewhere in between, and for good reasons. Charity is an important and good thing, but charity can be a powerful negative force when misapplied.
