Eliminate, or clarify, any jargon or Official Language that may be opaque to readers. Some other things to listen for or look for: Repetitive language. Wonky language and jargon. You may not be able to teach yourself to be a better writer, any more than 8-year-old me could outwit himself with a queen sacrifice.
