I've long admired this museum for its all-encompassing commitment to community co-creation , and the visit was a kind of pilgrimage to their new site (opened in 2008). It incorporates work by local artists, old and new construction, and is completely gorgeous. Last week, I visited the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle.

We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth. The exhibition evolved after it opened. We'd love to see this model evolve and grow. Short story: we learned a lot. We wrote a toolkit about our process.

This year, we produced our events--especially the 3rd Friday evening series--in partnership with over 700 artists and community organizations in Santa Cruz. Maybe if museums were open from 3-10pm instead of 10am-5pm, the attendance would be higher overall. The vast majority of that increase has come through attendance to new events.

The Museum is open the usual 10-5, Tuesday-Sunday. The Lab is open late, the visible staff is almost entirely students, and they play mix tapes over the stereo. We artists and designers love our cheese-cube-and-wine-fueled Gallery Nights and those should stay. Evening events entice with the promise of music and food.
