We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth. This project wove together many different participatory threads. The exhibition evolved after it opened. We'd love to see this model evolve and grow.

For years, I've been fascinated and a bit perplexed by the Elsewhere Collaborative , a thrift store turned artists' studio/living museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Over the past seven years, this exploration has been undertaken by a staff of artists and more than 35 creators each year participating in our residency program.

I led a session with Eric Siegel and Ellen Rosenthal on museum business models and some of the issues we grapple with in managing money. And I talked about some of the challenges of finding the right income and expense models for a museum that operates more like a community center than a traditional cultural institution.

Working with creative people taught me to think like an artist: observe, explore, dive in, look out. The “we” isn’t always staff; in most cases, our staff work with community partners in a participatory, co-creative model. An artist says: “I’ll explore the world, pull ideas from it, and craft a response.”

That is, I think about ways that our current collections could be reframed in more comfortable, open spaces as the triangulation points between visitors, providing conversation pieces and bonding opportunities. Over the last year, Starbucks has been opening stores in a few cities with a very different look--one that emulates the handmade, community vibe of locally-owned coffee shops. They may employ local artists to help create visitor experiences. It's a Starbucks.

I had a healthy second life as a slam poet, and I loved the world of artists and performance. I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling. I survived the first half of 2003 financially on art modeling and poetry gigs.

Now, the exhibit is closed and we're throwing open the doors on what was created. The whole exhibit modeled the potential for someone to respond to your query, and as it grew, the sense that you would be responded to and validated grew as well. The World Beach Project is managed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London with artist-in-residence Sue Lawty. While the terms are written in legalese and may not be understandable to all participants, I appreciate the V&A's placement of the terms out in the open (rather than asking you to agree to something you have not read).
