Little has been known about how philanthropy has—or hasn’t—supported them, until now. Smith University, with whom The Duke Endowment had a longstanding relationship.

In 1837 Richard Humphreys established the African Institute, now Cheyney University, in Pennsylvania making it the oldest historically Black university in the United States. As a proud alum of Howard University and Fisk University, I understand how critical HBCUs are in the professional and personal development of generations.

As a nonprofit management student, preparing to enter this field can be challenging because it’s still developing. The University of San Francisco was the first school to offer a Master’s in Nonprofit Administration less than 40 years ago, and the first School of Philanthropy was created just nine years ago at Indiana University.
