Our previous big exhibition, All You Need is Love, was highly participatory for visitors but minimally participatory in the development process. Going beyond content delivery, I also use a lot of participatory and hands-on learning techniques to help students gain a deeper understanding. Circles without tables, just chairs helps promote group discussion. More importantly, after every class I facilitate, I do a debrief with students as part of evaluating the training.

Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. This winter, I once again taught a graduate class in the University of Washington's Museology program.

My sessions were integrated into the various leadership, visioning process for women’s rights, curriculum development, and evaluation methods modules throughout the week as networked and social media skills were not the main focus. To date, the solution has been to put photos on the walls, pray for funding, and ignore the front-end evaluation bit.

When Lisa and I first discussed this, I argued that increased dwell time in the area and increased visitor comfort would likely lead to people spending more time looking at her work than would otherwise occur. If you do indeed want to cultivate a community discussion, start with a blog "family" to fuel the blog, or, better yet, consider another venue like Twitter or a social network that is a more conducive environment to active participation among strangers.
