Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Benetech Statistical Expert Testifies in Guatemala Disappearance Case The Benetech Human Rights Program uses cutting edge computing methods and statistical analysis to provide objective evidence of human rights violations. Guzmán’s testimony was based on his analysis of the Guatemalan National Police Archive which was discovered by chance in 2005 in a munitions storehouse in Guatemala City.

Then again, I shouldn’t have been surprised when I heard the playful notes of a street band wafting through the window while in Guatemala with Benetech's Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG). But first: why was I, a fresh graduate of UCLA, in Guatemala in the first place? (It’s

Guatemala Photo Essay

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Ann Harrison, our Communications Director, just pulled together a great photo essay on our work with the National Police Archive in Guatemala. I think this essay really brings home the reality of our work in Guatemala: the stories of interrupted lives buried in an archive being brought into the daylight, as well as the larger context of how this work connects with the issues facing Guatemalan society today

Benetech’s Daniel Guzmán Publishes Account of Landmark Guatemalan Human Rights Case

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Benetech statistician Daniel Guzmán has just published his account of one legal case which set a historic precedent for human rights in Guatemala. Discovered by chance in 2005 in an explosives storehouse in Guatemala City, the archive contains what archivists estimate to be 8 kilometers or approximately 80 million sheets, of paper. Statistical data are very seldom used as evidence in court cases in Guatemala, and defense attorneys were attempting to discredit his testimony.

Guatemala struggles to find war crimes justice

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Two good articles recently covered the Guatemala secret police archive project that we are supporting. Guatemala struggles to find war crimes justice was in the San Francisco Chronicle, and captures the personal side of this work. Many people want to know what happened to those who disappeared in Guatemala's civil war. ITworld.com's Digging for the truth quotes Benetech's Tamy Guberek and notes that our Martus software is being used in the project.

One of our hottest human rights projects is our work in Guatemala, helping with the huge secret police archive that is being analyzed there. National Public Radio's Morning Edition had a great story on the topic this morning, and Benetech's very own Patrick Ball was quoted talking about this as the largest secret police archive ever made available to the human rights process. Be sure to check out the transcript of the piece

Testimony From Benetech’s Daniel Guzmán Helps Establish Legal Precedent and Convictions for Forced Disappearance in Guatemala

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I announced in this blog last month that judges in Guatemala had found two former police officers guilty in the 1984 forced disappearance of Guatemalan student and union leader Edgar Fernando García. This historical ruling has established forced disappearance as a crime in Guatemala and provided government prosecutors with a key legal precedent needed to investigate higher ranking officers for their possible role in the case.

Facebook recently announced a test in Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Slovakia, Serbia, Guatemala, and Cambodia. If you work in marketing or communications, you know about the Facebook Newsfeed and it’s impact on organic reach. Some of your posts are seen by lots of people, and some of your posts aren’t. Facebook can’t exist without its users. So the Newsfeed algorithm tries to predict what each user wants to see in their Newsfeed. But no algorithm is perfect. So they test and tweak.

The past year of research by HRDAG analysts has supported key criminal prosecutions and uncovered the truth about political violence in Guatemala, Iran, Colombia, Chad and Liberia.

UpEnergy: cool for-profit social enterprise

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

They are already active in Africa and Latin America, in countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia, El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The rise of for-profit social enterprises has been quite exciting. Although I'm firmly on the nonprofit side with Benetech (because we focus on big issues where the market is failing), it's definitely easier to get funded sustainably if you have an exciting and invest-able business plan. Evan Haigler is a social entrepreneur I've known for years.
