I always love it when I see a staff show at a museum or a wall at a design firm celebrating the kids who have come in to serve as focus group members (see photo). This creates a dependency where visitors only experience the communal relationship if it is facilitated by staff.

In a straightforward way, Marilyn explains how her team developed a participatory project to improve engagement in a gallery with an awkward entry. When I wrote about this in 2008, I focused on the question of how to design exhibits to be optimized for "pointiness." But designing an entire museum that functions this way probably isn't your goal.
