Participants can respond to questions and add their thoughts and we can see each other’s faces. Ask a lot of questions beforehand to understand technology comfort. Except when it isn’t!

This week marks five years since the book The Participatory Museum was first released. Across the museum field, the questions about visitor participation have gone from "what?" I thought the pinnacle of participatory practice was an exhibit that could inspire collective visitor action without facilitation. and "why?" to "how?".

Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. This winter, I once again taught a graduate class in the University of Washington's Museology program.

I''ve followed Wright''s work for years because of his unique perspective on the potential for game-players to be game-makers - in other words, to co-create the gaming experience. I wanted to open up conversation about how we judge the relative ethics of various sources of museum revenue--all of which have moral grey areas. An even smaller percentage create it.
