Dennis McCarthy and I had the pleasure of presenting Online Benchmarking: What Worked in 2012 at the Nonprofit Technology Conference in Minneapolis, MN. Though the full report is not out, we shared the key findings to those who attended in person and online. A benchmark study is a tool, and like any tool, it depends on how it’s used.

The latest Blackbaud Online Marketing Benchmark Study for Nonprofits analyzed data from more than 4,000 nonprofits to provide the largest analysis in online giving data. According to the 2012 Nonprofit benchmark Social Network Benchmarking Report, 98% of nonprofits didn’t raise a dime on Facebook, which is second most trafficked site on the web in the U.S. These numbers are dismal and nonprofits should not expect these figures to change drastically heading into 2013.

Epsilon and The Email Institute’s Q3 2012 report indicated overall click-through rates have fallen from 5.5 based national nonprofits in 2012.

There were a number of interesting findings from the new Luminate Online Benchmark Report , released at BBCON. The report includes results from 794 nonprofits, including $1.27 billion emails sent from July 2013-June 2014. According to the report, nonprofits sent a whopping 72% more appeal emails. A few days ago, I reported some of the juicy details from the 2013 eNonprofit Benchmarks Study that was just released showing data from 2012. For every 1,000 email subscribers, groups in the Benchmarks Study have 149 Facebook Fans, 53 Twitter Followers, and 29 Mobile Subscribers.
