In 2009 , students built a participatory exhibit from scratch. Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. When activities were not facilitated, people were often too timid to interact.

This exhibition represents a few big shifts for us: We used a more participatory design process. Our previous big exhibition, All You Need is Love, was highly participatory for visitors but minimally participatory in the development process. We're involving visitor services and volunteers more intentionally in facilitation.

I thought the pinnacle of participatory practice was an exhibit that could inspire collective visitor action without facilitation. But almost ALL of those opportunities are facilitated by people. The guide, Vi Mar, was an incredible facilitator. She did several things over the course of the tour to make it participatory, and she did so in a natural, delightful way. Wherever possible, Vi personalized the tour to individuals in the group. She has a personal connection to everything we saw on tour. 5'11", 6'1", etc.

Rock climbing (safely) is a two-person activity. One person holds the rope, the other ascends the rock. The gym staff aren’t offering instruction or serving as users’ partners; instead, they facilitate connections among the users. Make explicit invitations in label copy for multi-person exhibits.

I want to see more multi-person exhibits, more prompts for discussion about content, more tools to facilitate connecting wtih other visitors whose interests are similar or in some way useful to your own. By the standard set by a culture that judges MySpace as dangerous, perhaps these in-person interactions are even MORE dangerous.

This relationship bit helped me think about how different kinds of folks will be involved with a highly participatory, community-co-created project in the long-term.
