Last week I facilitated a workshop in Detroit hosed by Co-Act , a nonprofit collaboration space in Detroit. Co-Act is a unique organization, a hub for accelerating collaborative action in Southeast Michigan’s nonprofit community. My style of teaching is participatory; I don’t lecture with PPT endlessly and involve the audience.

We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth. We wrote a toolkit about our process. This project wove together many different participatory threads. We commissioned new collaborative artwork.

Every once in a while I come across a project I wish I could have included in The Participatory Museum. an exhibition produced with schoolchildren at the Wallace Collection in London, is a lovely example of co-creation that demonstrates the multiple benefits of inviting audience members to act as partners in arts organizations.

I meet them doing research in the archives, collaborating on cultural festivals, and contributing stories to exhibitions. The metaphor for traditional art museums is the temple. On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. We shrunk the exhibit design process (concept to floor) from 2 years to five months.
