Trainer’s Notebook: Making Accommodations In Workshops

Last week I facilitated a workshop in Detroit hosed by Co-Act , a nonprofit collaboration space in Detroit. The workshop was focused on personal resilience and self-care based on my book, The Happy Healthy Nonprofit and was part of series of workshops on resilience. Before the workshop begins, I will greet wheel chair users or participants who have mobility challenges and explain that there will be some moving around and find out what they are comfortable doing.

I'm planning a new workshop on selecting donor databases, focusing on the question, "Why is this so friggin' complicated?" Some initial thoughts: The maxim "Fast, cheap, or good -- pick two" is true. You want the technology to be forward-looking but also want to avoid shiny object syndrome. You want to make a reasonably quick decision, but also need to get input and buy-in from stakeholders. You want to think big, but don't want to neglect operational details.

Last week at the IFC-Asia , I co-designed and facilitated a 90 minute workshop with Marco Kuntze titled “ The Digital NGO: The Journey from Paper to Screen.” There are different ways to design a participatory workshop. We designed a highly interactive workshop based on Jo Wolfe’s “ NGO Digital Maturity Matrix ,” an assessment tool that enables nonprofits to codify mindsets and skill sets required for moving along the path of digital transformation.
