Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

One of my stops was to the attend the Sixth Gathering of Social Entrepreneurs, organized by the Social Enterprise Alliance , and held in Milwaukee. Here's an article from the Milwaukee press on the event: When non-profits cash in I just returned from a great trip. It was great to have roughly 600 people all getting the energy of social enterprise. The biggest supporter of the conference was Steve Case's Foundation (the founder of AOL).

And in Milwaukee, while Black Americans are only 26 percent of the population, they account for an astounding 81 percent of the deaths there. posted by Jaime Ernesto Uzeta, CEO, Public Allies. First published on Ozy.com. America has a long and rich history of national service, often turning to it as a powerful lever in times of crisis, as it did after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the Great Recession of 2008. Now should be no different.

Using SMS to Aid Pre-Surgery Compliance and Post-Surgery Recovery

The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee ran a study to see if text message reminders could increase patient compliance for pre-surgical showers. The long lists of dos and don’ts prior to a surgery can sometimes cause patients to neglect a crucial step. Patients often forget to ask for explanations of preoperative procedures because they are preoccupied with the surgery itself.

Happy New Year! Two Free Books! And Watermelon!

Museum 2.0

Milwaukee!) Dear Museum 2.0 readers, 2010 was a big year for me. I published The Participatory Museum in March (with help from many of you!) and spent the rest of the year traveling to give workshops and presentations related to its content. While I did learn a ton from my experiences, especially in far-flung places and small museums, it was also exhausting.

Thank You RCI Customers!

Waukesha is a suburb of Milwaukee and is the hometown of electric guitar pioneer, Les Paul. Gosh, has it been nine years now since I started TechSoup's Refurbished Computer Initiative (RCI) program? We've hit something of a benchmark in this successful program: we've distributed a little over 50,000 refurbished devices through RCI — including laptops, monitors, servers, and tablets. This is such a big milestone that we just want to thank our customers.

Gathering: looking back

Another person with equal dedication was Julann Jatczak, who was chairing the program committee for a second Gathering (her first was also successful: the Milwaukee Gathering a few years back)! Most Successful Ever! I wasn't surprised to find out that this was the best attended Gathering of the Social Enterprise Alliance. So many people did a great job making this the event for social enterprisers in North America. I'm hoping we can expand our reach globally in future years!

National Fluid Power Association –NFPA is a trade association based in Milwaukee. We got started this quarter with an assessment and trip to Milwaukee for the brainstorm with staff. Wandering Down the "Don't Touch" Line

Museum 2.0

The Milwaukee Art Museum has a video explaining do's and don'ts of the museum for children. How do you help visitors know what they can and cannot do in your museum? Most museums have this figured out: they have signs, they have guards, they have cases over the objects. But what happens if you take away the "Don't Touch" signs and the uniforms? What if you want to create a more generous atmosphere that presumes the goodwill and propriety of visitors?

Navigation by Recommendation: Lessons Learned from a Little Experiment

Museum 2.0

I spent some time playing with this question last week at the Milwaukee Art Museum, a large general museum that is moving toward redesign of the permanent galleries. How do you find your way around a multi-faceted museum? Do you interrogate the map? Create a plan for yourself? Get deliciously lost? I was there for a think tank about the reinstallation along with a handful of designers and academics. As a visitor on my own, I got instantly lost in the main part of the permanent collection.

A good example is the Milwaukee Bar Association’s pro bono directory and also the Virginia Bar Association’s Pro Bono Resource Center. I have no idea how it got started, but one of the most available and effective forms of corporate social responsibility are pro bono legal services for charities. And today my dad wrote this letter to the editor of the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel, the local paper. I want to tell you a bit about my parents. Bill and Beth live in Wisconsin, in the house where I grew up.
