For a related teen project , I was invited to teach roughly 200 middle- and high-school students about geocaching (a GPS-based scavenger hunt) so that they could send miniature sculpture pieces out into the world. The little works of art then travel around the region, transferred from person to person via the hidden geocaches.

Sure, it's social, but people stick to their own "pods"--families, teens, adults--and don't diverge or merge. These "partially limiting barriers" are successful in other venues as well--most notably online, where it is personal anonymity rather than temporal transience that makes the interaction between strangers feel controlled.

I saw teens and adults who sat and did this activity for 45 minutes and wasn’t surprised to hear that some people spend over an hour on it.
