It has been almost three weeks since we concluded bbcon 2018 in Orlando, and we’re still wrapping our head around the terrific content seen and inspiring conversations overheard amongst over 2,000 attendees from across the social, private and public sectors. With over 275 sessions over three days, opportunities for learning were plentiful.

Within 24 hours of the news, the EMPSFM staff hosted a tribute event at a local music venue and mounted an exhibit of Jackson's iconic glove/jacket along with archival concert video in a free public area (appropriately called the Sky Church). The question is what happens after the news cycle is over, after the urgency diminishes.

One pair started out with a "chicken and the egg" question, but then moved to something more interesting and subversive (a sign outside a pharmacy that recently was bought by CVS asking people which business they preferred).

Librarian Aaron Schmidt tells the great story of a game night of Dance, Dance, Revolution at his library in which a teen asked him: “Hey Aaron, can I go upstairs to grab a magazine and book to read?”

We collaborated with two local organizations--the Rebele Homeless Family Shelter and Dominican Oaks retirement community--to conduct oral histories and produce a small audio and photo-based exhibit on maintaining love in tough situations. So, we created simple handmade abacuses that people use to track their responses to sets of questions.

Ah, public libraries! A recent conversation with Erica Busillo Adams of Providence Public Library is a perfect case in point! Providence Public Library first opened to the public in 1878. Unlike many public libraries, Providence Public Library is a private 501(c)(3) that is chartered as a free public library.
