We don’t have any expectations that adults will interact with their children while they are in the space; instead we are perfectly comfortable with giving them a space where they know their child is safe while they interact with each other. There was a wonderful example at the Ontario Science Center in their Hot Zone area, which features several voting and commenting kiosks popular with teens. The image at the top of this post is from one of their simple visitor feedback interactives which was built into a familiar, casual rolodex.

In that case, my personal interaction with the users allowed me to honestly and openly share the changes that were affecting all of us. I spoke about my recent obsession with book drops and how libraries are turning their most mundane transactions into the basis for beautiful, useful, sexy interactions with users.

Also, the teen selections often featured teenagers interviewing visitors about their reactions to the pieces. They gave me voices to discuss with and helped me start interacting with the piece. Malls are safe, stimulating public spaces for casual social interactions. It’s ironic, when you think about the great pains that museums and libraries go to to create spaces that are “teen-positive,” that malls attract kids effortlessly with fluorescent lights and lousy music.
