May 17, 2021 – Today, Maryland’s largest autism resource center Pathfinders for Autism formally commenced its 2021 Dip Challenge Tour , a statewide bus tour and major fundraising initiative to expand autism resources and programs across Maryland. According to the CDC , Maryland has the fourth highest autism rate in the U.S.

Pathfinders for Autism (PFA) is a Maryland-based nonprofit that supports and improves the lives of individuals affected by autism. Pathfinders for Autism started in 2000 when a group of parents of children with autism sought information and support following their child’s diagnosis. There’s a golf tournament that has grown over time.

As luck would have it, a Congressional delegation was also on hand and, upon seeing the dogs and learning of the work, asked if the program could be brought to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Instead, a whole group of “extreme puppy watchers” started tuning into the Warrior Canine Puppy Cam.

What’s more important than engaging more corporate volunteer groups? Look, I’m not trying to dissuade folks from seeking corporate employee volunteer groups, programs or projects. Oftentimes corporate employee volunteers don’t understand the time and resources required to engage their group. Maybe if you enjoy gambling.

I’ve been to countless conferences at the Gaylord Resort in Maryland and every time, I get lost. Maybe I’m just navigationally challenged but better signage and more thoughtful grouping of the sessions and events would help me, and, I suspect, many others. ALL of these lessons should endure past this pandemic!

In New Mexico, the Thornburg Foundation convened a group of funders working in early childhood education and maternal health to advocate for more state support for effective, evidence-based programs. Doing this will help the group think in terms of patterns and trends. The group coalesced around a specific project and then kept going.
