To make this model work, there was another IRC backchannel that streamed audio from the conference and someone did the equivalent of live tweeting. Robert Scoble calls this taking a twitter break.

It's not the extent to which they are participatory. In some cases, that's based on subject matter, as at the Museum of Jurassic Technology or the American Visionary Art Museum. Especially when it comes to small museums with limited collections, a distinctive personality is often the best thing the institution has to offer.

I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling. After a long day running around a science center, I would show up at the Worcester Art Museum in the evening and make $20 just to stand around and listen to a painting instructor talk about art.

We rarely offer alcoholic beverages, comfortable seating, background music, or free admission to go with the art, lectures, and interactive experiences now available in many hybrid retail spaces.

I want to see more multi-person exhibits, more prompts for discussion about content, more tools to facilitate connecting wtih other visitors whose interests are similar or in some way useful to your own. By the standard set by a culture that judges MySpace as dangerous, perhaps these in-person interactions are even MORE dangerous.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. In Praise of the Post-It There's lots of post-it-powered art on the web these days (like this and this ). The previous exhibit in this space was a very provocative art exhibit about sexual violence, and yet in our brief site survey in April we saw almost no one stop to look at the art. Facebook has a diversified object model--for some people, friend updates are the essential object, for others, it's virtual gifts. This is hard to do when exhibit interactions are not personalized. Some, like the Brooklyn Museum's ArtShare Facebook application, make it easy for users to share their art interests with others.

It launched in October of 2007 with a very simple and understandable idea: to produce a global map of pieces of art made with stones on beaches. The act of making art, and the recognition on a simple website, are the only rewards. In their personal statements, beach artists wrote about profound connections to nature.

It is crucial that LAMs be considered public civic spaces, but Oldenburg's model leaves a lot to be desired. The ideal of third places, that attracts we cultural heritage types, is a democratic space where civic life is built collaboratively and at a personal level.
