There are many participatory kiosks that are functional black holes--visitors make videos or draw pictures or write stories, drop them in a slot, and. Or if YouTube allowed people to upload videos but gave them no information about when those videos would be available for viewing. nothing happens.

I eagerly read about a new social psychology research study in which whites, Asians, and Latinos engaged in a simple collaborative activity--making a music video together. When the music video was not focused on Mexican culture, no such change occurred. But each of these studies yields another useful nugget.

In the history gallery, we have some blended props and artifacts, and it's rarely clear what is and is not ok to touch. Art, however, does not come to museums pre-hardened.

Again, hundreds of mostly young people shot hundreds of videos and photos featuring or on location at the museum. event, the Computer History Museum had 15 reviews on Yelp!

But the design of Side Trip really allows those stories to flourish, both through creative acts like the poster-making and light show and through participatory expression on the rolodexes and the Youtube-a-phone.

When you make a video in the Mattress Factory's iConfess booth, it shows up on the iConfess YouTube channel. When you augment a photo in the Chicago History Museum's Get Lincolnized! Exhibits that produce content that goes to social websites like YouTube or Flickr are automatically presented in relation to other visitors' productions.
