I considered going with an iPhone but haven't been wild about the user experience on my iPad (too inflexible, inconsistent navigation from app to app, Apple bans apps they simply don't like) and I can't abide the idea of a phone with a battery that can't be swapped (which also eliminated the new Motorola Droid RAZR from consideration).

If I added a new contact in Gmail, it sync'd to the Pre, but if I added or deleted a contact on the Pre the change didn't show up in Gmail. Allow messaging and email in landscape mode. I use Spanning Sync to keep iCal and Address Book on the laptop in sync with iCal and Address Book on the Mac (and in sync with Google Calendar and Gmail). Sure, I can charge my phone, but I have to be careful not to let iTunes sync, because it insists on only syncing to one iTunes Library at a time. When I travel, I can’t sync.

I just turned off her cell phone account because she was never using it. For calendar and email, we'll likely set her up with a Google Account instead of MobileMe.
