We decided to approach the label-writing for these boards in a participatory way. Maybe this person was writing about his or her preference for neon paper products, but I doubt it. It was the activity that drew this person (and probably others) to the surfboards—not the objects themselves.

At the training, we saw examples of small visions--like a restaurant barback who had a vision for a better way to make juice--and big ones--like the 10-year vision for the 700-person Zingerman's community of businesses. Unless your organization is tiny, staff members can't have personal relationships with every user--nor, ethically, might they want to. Make room for personal expression and ownership--both by staff and audience members. In most cases, docents and floor staff are trained to be the point person for conversation and idea-sharing.

Over the last year, Starbucks has been opening stores in a few cities with a very different look--one that emulates the handmade, community vibe of locally-owned coffee shops. I believe that setting that expectation at the outset made a big difference both in my eventual pay and the responsibilities offered to me.
