Two years ago, we mounted one of our most successful participatory exhibits ever at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History: Memory Jars. There were no written instructions, just a mural that suggested what to do and labels that prompted people for their name and memory. For the content of the labels, Anna used three strategies.

In 2009 , students built a participatory exhibit from scratch. Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. Written instructions were not enough to compel them to do otherwise.

The Leading Change Summit was more intimate (several hundred people), participatory and interactive, intense, and stimulating. Good instructional design to create an environment for peer dialogue begins with good on boarding and for people to connect with something they already know or believe.

All of the instructions are handwritten on paper or cardboard. But the design of Side Trip really allows those stories to flourish, both through creative acts like the poster-making and light show and through participatory expression on the rolodexes and the Youtube-a-phone. The gym staff aren’t offering instruction or serving as users’ partners; instead, they facilitate connections among the users. Extension programs use wikis, flickr, blogs, tagging, and other tools to share information and content. Social Interaction - People can have conversations and create content together. It's messy.

They demonstrate that the blog is a more participatory vehicle than other kinds of media. It's easy as the blogger to feel this way--after all, I get the most value as a content recipient when you comment back to me, so I (probably incorrectly) inflate the value of those posts. They prove that the conversation is two-way. It's awesome.

For many museums, visitor research--how people use the museum, navigate exhibits, and understand content--may be an equally important arena in which to adopt groundswell listening techniques. There may be confrontations between the institutional listeners (often in marketing) and the content developers (who may not believe what they hear).

The convenors set up a lovely wiki and gave us specific instructions to answer research questions posed on a series of pages. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. Wikis don't explicitly acknowledge individuals with "profile power"--content is prioritized, not identity. over email. a conference).
