Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. On platforms with many participatory options, more people are more active. I think this diversification is key to inviting broad audiences to feel meaningfully involved in participatory projects. But another way to look at participation inequality is via the diversity of types of participation available.

The London Science Museum team designed an entire exhibition and then left a few open vitrines at the end for visitors to contribute their own toys during the run of the exhibition. There are several good resources on evaluating participation. Another source of resources comes from the growing body of social media evaluation tools.

It's not the extent to which they are participatory. Design firms' projects often have a common look across different cities and institutions. Funders like the NSF have encouraged science centers in particular to share their techniques and evaluations, which is fabulous but also leads to rampant and sometimes unthinking imitation.
