It incorporates work by local artists, old and new construction, and is completely gorgeous. The guide, Vi Mar, was an incredible facilitator. This brought other voices into the tour, but more importantly, it modeled a potential interaction that we could have. But participatory facilitation can be taught. I avoid them.

The facilitation was as chaotic and fragile as a spiderweb. We'd love to see this model evolve and grow. Short story: we learned a lot.

What we do here in Oakland, and throughout the Bay Area, is we work with inner city companies that not only have a scalable model, but also have a social responsibility aspect built into their business model. The same thing applies to exhibits, but Second Life is a tool that facilitates making the exhibit in a more accessible way than full-scale fabrication. Once we realized that virtual exhibits would not translate directly to the real world, we transitioned to a model where the real exhibits were "inspired by" the virtual.

Facilitated/Unfacilitated Blend When we started this course, I really pushed the students to think about ways to induce unfacilitated interactions among strangers. I love facilitated experiences, but I worry that they aren't scalable to every visitor. They were roped to very specific locations and activities.
