I learned a ton at Skid Row School, but the lesson that still keeps me up at night is this one: when you want to scale and spread a model, you have to distill it to its essence.

There were a very wide range of people there, from folks who didn’t know a whole lot about open source, to those who were developing open source apps. An older woman of color noted that a lot of the problems that open source developers were solving weren’t problems that communities faced.

It was held in Newcastle in the north of England, and about 70 folks from around the world (but mostly Europe) came to play, learn, make stuff, and help each other work out challenges inherent in trying to make risky ideas happen. I tried to help workshop leaders work some of these in on the fly, but that put unreasonable stress on them.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. We inspired a community and got real results. But it wasn't all rosy, and we weren't perfect.

I met lovely people in engineering, but I found the work to be too detail-oriented and microscopic in scope to satisfy me. There's not a lot of work in pinball, and I had a deep secondary interest in unschooling and free-choice learning. I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling.
