It makes us uncomfortable with opening museum content up to comment, tagging, and alterations by visitors. Be personal.

One of the things you have to do with user-generated content -- participatory media projects is show the work to encourage others to jump in. Unfortunately, it didn't have an option for "groups" - you can only pull photos based on tags or a user. So, I went to the pool and added a unique tag to the 17 photos.

Unlike Superstruct , which employed a very open-ended collaborative framework to invite people to imagine their circumstances in 2019 relative to several provocative scenarios, Signtific is a more focused, tight experience, both in content and format. In other words, a new kind of talkback board or participatory educational program.

It's rare that a participatory museum project is more than a one-shot affair. In contrast, the Wikimedians were focused on making cultural content digitally available online using as open a licensing structure as possible. The project's implementation keeps changing, and I can't decide whether it is getting better or just different.

Usually, the institution wants to maintain some control--whether over where the content comes from or how it is selected and organized. In this way, Click is a powerful example of the "venue as content platform" definition of 2.0. We are just providing the container, the mechanism so it can function. They kept the interface simple.

It's not the extent to which they are participatory. They reflect the soul of the community and can be responsive to its unique interests and needs. Funders and potential donors tend to look for particular benchmarks of professionalism (appropriately), and few are comfortable funding the most risky or content-specific institutions.

They were ahead of the museum curve, using language like "participatory learning environment" (Brooklyn Children's Museum, 1977) that is still thick in the mouths of contemporary museum directors in other fields. All of these have gone through a series of movements in the last 30 years reflecting cultural shifts and expectations.

The participatory element employs an accessible speculative question. The Odditoreum's "write your own label" program is very successful because visitors are being asked to author imaginative content. The participatory element is modeled well by the "official" content. While there, I was lucky to get to experience a highly participatory exhibition that the MIA mounts once a decade: Foot in the Door. By limiting artworks by size alone, Foot in the Door is open to a huge range of content and media. The diversity of content promotes comfortable dialogue about preferences.

The table had no comparable physical analog to help people understand how to connect their cards to the multimedia content. Because this exhibit is new, the staff don't yet have data on how many people choose to review their content at home. Some responses were more reflective, like "I will never forget."

As Doug McLennan wrote in Arts Journal , Kim’s message was condescending, impersonal, did not respond to the specific issue at hand, and did not reflect an honest interest in engagement. The goal is more likely to promote social learning, participation by visitors, and interpersonal exchange around museum content. For hundreds of years, we've owned the content and the message. While we may grudgingly acknowledge the fact that visitors create their own versions of the message around subsets of the content, we don't consciously empower visitors to redistribute their own substandard, non-authoritative messages. Gifting is a powerful participatory behavior. The concept here is that the people who want to share their content--photos, blogs, audio--are the ones who are willing to pay for it. This concept is reflected in the "premium" paid version of many services, which offer you better ways to publish rather than better ways to view content.

You can explore the project wiki where we coordinated the exhibit, including the project overview , our six-week plan to get it all done, and individual sections for development of concept , content , interaction , graphics , marketing , fabrication , installation , and evaluation. This same process can also be applied to visitor-generated content. But if the content is laying fallow, reviewed by NO ONE, why not let visitors take up the mantle? I admit that I have often jumped directly to "embracing" in exploration of how museums can become more participatory.

I believe that, as with basic human needs, experience design in museums (and for other content platforms) can occur on many levels, and that it is hard to achieve the highest level without satisfying, or at least understanding, those that come before it. It was the kind of experience I wish I had at lots of museum programs—the staff and the content pulled me out of my comfort zone, engaged me in something unusual, and made me feel great. The NAS publishes one such report every business day, and apparently these reports are seen as a gold standard of objective, well-researched content on a range of industries and issues. Libraries are more customer-focused, museums, more content-focused. Museums provide the information that we deem useful or interesting.
