Note from Beth: There has been a variety of criticism of contests. Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.

After Marc finished reading the Networked Nonprofit , he was curious about crowdfunding and free agents, chapters in our book. Since this was an experiment to test social networking, I did not send an appeal to friends and family in the way people do when they raise funds for a run or walk, or want you to vote for a particular contest.

Take the opportunity to ask your followers to share their own stories and experiences – in words, photos or videos. Additionally, we reach out to people on our social networks or through our network of chapters and support groups. We were ecstatic by the reception of the contest and astounded by the numbers of votes cast.

All 700+ chapters are participating in the campaign. We created a wiki full of sample avatars, banners, widgets, videos, audio clips, etc. Since the great wall fell, we've been able to promote initiatives like the Western Union Foundation contest to all of our chapters and blood regions. that are easy to grab and use.
