I’m looking for a place to donate in honor of my mother’s 90 th birthday, and a gift made to the local symphony orchestra in Myrtle Beach seemed like the right thing to do. As kids become teens, encourage them to volunteer with your organization. Could your teen volunteers help run the kids programs? Fast forward to 2017.

This post features an interview with Sarah Schultz, a museum staffer at one of the institutions Light profiled in the book (the Walker Art Center). In the 1990s, we decided we wanted to engage a teen audience. We created a teen arts council, invested in staff, and invested in programming. That's how we build trust.

For older kids and teens that benefit from your youth organization, a video game tournament is a great opportunity for them to show off their skills while raising funds for your organization. Their event reached 111% of its fundraising goal, and the folks at Snow City Arts got to share their passion for art with their supporters.

I immediately flashed to my work with art museums and staff members' concerns that older, traditional audiences will shy away from social engagement in the galleries. Many teens love to perform for each other. First, teens often have incredibly tight social spheres. Second, teens today are incredibly aware of "stranger danger."
