One of the things I always focus on in participatory exhibit design is ensuring that everyone has the same tools to work with.

Why are teens over-represented in participatory projects? If your activity is compelling because it involves gimmicky new technology, it's not a good activity.

The Art of Participation provides a retrospective on participatory art as well as presenting opportunities for visitors to engage in contemporary (“now”) works. If the participatory instructions were integrated into the standard black labels, visitors would not be as aware of the commonalities across the interactive art pieces.

The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. Include a mix of individual activities (often writing or drawing), partner/small group work, and whole group discussion. Use unorthodox activities to inspire fresh thinking. Be honest and clear about the opportunity at hand.

We had documented the activity with pictures of the people with their cards, and it was abundantly clear after the dust cleared that the personality and energy of the recommendations were in the images, not the cards. They demonstrate that the blog is a more participatory vehicle than other kinds of media. If you do indeed want to cultivate a community discussion, start with a blog "family" to fuel the blog, or, better yet, consider another venue like Twitter or a social network that is a more conducive environment to active participation among strangers.

The convenors set up a lovely wiki and gave us specific instructions to answer research questions posed on a series of pages. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. After the conference, the wiki switched from being a participatory site to a useful record. On March 22, they released the wiki. over email.
