Better to establish a relationship with a leader in their community--someone with whom you are building reciprocal value--and ask them to help be your ambassador. Create a structure that values peoples' participation. The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner.

We always knew that the inclusion of participatory and community-centered practices in arts institutions was controversial. To me, the backlash against participatory and community-centered experiences is not surprising.
