Short story: we learned a lot. This project wove together many different participatory threads. The facilitation was as chaotic and fragile as a spiderweb. We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth.

I still get fidgety listening to the podcast, but now I see it as an artifact of a supremely conducted participatory project rather the sole product of the process. I always love it when I see a staff show at a museum or a wall at a design firm celebrating the kids who have come in to serve as focus group members (see photo).

The design is nothing special: a question printed on construction paper with a bunch of post-its and pens for visitors to respond. The questions are written for parents and caregivers to share tips, ideas, and stories with each other. This is a participatory comment board in a true sense. with arrows pointing to other comments.

In many cases people were pointing at things that were simple in design and form--quotes, statistics, facts and figures. When I wrote about this in 2008, I focused on the question of how to design exhibits to be optimized for "pointiness." But designing an entire museum that functions this way probably isn't your goal.

Many wrote personally about their reasons for making the work, sharing challenges along the way and evocative stories about their meaning. Consider these two stories of museum-related wikis that struggled. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. After the conference, the wiki switched from being a participatory site to a useful record. Its success can distort understanding of what makes a wiki work. But wikis are a very specific tool.
