The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. Close with a rallying activity, ideally one that invites people to continue conversations with each other. to get the conversation started. Create a structure that values peoples' participation.

The design and feel of the place was different than any science center I''d ever experienced. A Community Science Workshop is a place for kids to tinker, make, and explore their world through science. In most cases, they''re not places where kids can go by themselves at all. I knew I could learn a lot from it.

Every issue cycle was the same: visitors would watch the video in silence, and then as soon as the voting opened, a murmur of conversation would run through the room. There is no component to the exhibition that highlights the specific selections made by individuals in the room, and no vehicle to incite conversation among differing groups.
