I write this piece in good faith about the organizations I know best: museums. The vast majority of American museums are institutions of white privilege. They present masterpieces by white male artists and innovations by white male scientists. I never saw comparable adjectives used in the European art labels at the museum.

Imagine if you didn’t need an expensive camera, artistic mastery, or a ton of time to create what was in your mind’s eye. Note the clear language to identify the object, the action, the background or context, and then most importantly the artistic style that the output should create. A picture is worth a thousand words. Check out this inane AT&T commercial about a woman whose absorption in her smartphone is so great that Facebook updates become substantiated as pieces of art in the museum through which she strolls. It also suggests that for young people, masterpieces in museums are not nearly as interesting as a good friend''s new haircut.

Two recent events have got me thinking about pranks and unauthorized activities in museums. Improv Everywhere staged an event at the Metropolitan Museum in which an actor posing as King Philip IV of Spain signed autographs in front of his portrait, as painted by Diego Velazquez in the 1620s. I feel like it's more complicated than that.

How does this question play out in museums? At the 2013 American Alliance of Museums annual conference, a group of exhibition designers explored authenticity in a session called Is it Real? They explored a huge range of museum objects and grey areas of "realness." Many artists work with assistants and reproducing processes.

I''ve mostly seen museums employ one of two methods for formal community advisors: Create special "spots" on the board of trustees for certain kinds of community representatives. CON: can feel disconnected from the primary governance of the museum or can feel like a second-class board overall. I struggle with both these options.

Earlier in 2013, I was amazed to visit one of the new “Studio” spaces at the Denver Art Museum. The Denver Art Museum is no stranger to community collaborations, but we’ve been dipping in our toe a little more deeply when it comes to developing permanent participatory installations. I've long admired this museum for its all-encompassing commitment to community co-creation , and the visit was a kind of pilgrimage to their new site (opened in 2008). Jason Beaubien was reporting on the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City, the gleaming new art museum built as a "gift to Mexico" by the world's richest man, Carlos Slim. Stories like these give the art world (and the museum world, by extension) a bad name.
