You need the headspace and the free time to think of ideas, and the resources to make them happen--whether that's $30 or $300,000.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. Everyone is entitled to art in their life.

What we do here in Oakland, and throughout the Bay Area, is we work with inner city companies that not only have a scalable model, but also have a social responsibility aspect built into their business model. And we do it for free. They're artists so they think big. We don't seek out socially responsible companies.
