In our quest to build a solid foundation for nonprofits and libraries to understand how cloud computing is likely to affect us, we have now completed our GreenTech Initiative Green Side of Cloud Computing campaign. This article explains what cloud computing is overall, the basic types of cloud computing, why it is an area of green IT, the advantages and drawbacks to moving your work to the cloud, and my prediction on what the future of the cloud will be for nonprofits and libraries.

This year I didn't attend in person, but have been reviewing reports on the show and have to conclude that there's not much new and exciting in the field of green IT gadgets. Of course rapid adoption of the new Apple iPad and other e-readers are one of the big IT stories this year. Last week, I talked about how green these devices are.

Switzerland was the first country in the world to adopt an electronics recycling system is 1991.Things are actually going pretty well in Europe. They are developing an industrial capacity, for instance, with companies like Trishyiraya Recycling in Southern India. It does have an industry standard for proper electronics recycling and processing, and a developed industry. It has had 30 percent growth in mobile adoption over the last 10 years.

This is a communique on the current state of cloud adoption in India from Prashant Pandit and Pooja Jayna from TechSoup Global's, NASSCOM Foundation BIGTech Program , which is an NGO committed to building ICT capacity in civil society in India. The survey indicated that almost 70 percent NGOs are unaware of cloud computing, and the 30 percent NGOs that are aware of it, are unclear on how it could benefit them and taking the next steps toward adoption.

What we're trying to do is generate enough support to indicate that we need these announcements out of the auto industry to translate into something tangible. Additionally, there has been a lot of rhetoric on the part of the automakers regarding the greenness of their operations, when in fact what we are seeing is a lot of green-washing. Cloud services are rapidly scaling to the point where larger NPOs can safely adopt them, and Google and Microsoft will keep the heat on to get NPOs there at low cost.

In the book, I pinpoint five of the main ones, but I think part of it is an understandable reason, I would argue, which is that we've really prioritized, in the public conversation, a focus on the most emitting industry. So, dirty coal fire power plants, the oil industry: the sectors that are really contributing the most carbon dioxide emissions. Reading books about changing the world can be inspiring, but they can also be overwhelming and depressing. Not Anna Lappé's books.

We also work with some socially responsible businesses like Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; we are working with Annie's Organic right now, and so a broad mix of people who are trying to make the world a better place. I think that in terms of consciousness raising, in terms of pop culture adopting a lot of stuff that was maybe thought of as environmental fringe or as progressive, civil rights kind of fringe, I think it has penetrated pop culture a lot more.
