At the tiny science center, I got to do everything from leading programs to building exhibits to managing volunteers to cleaning snot off of plexiglass. I tried to master the administrative work as quickly as possible so I could keep volunteering for other creative projects.

In some ways, we do a good job engaging people who reflect our whole County. If we want to reflect the identities of our community, we’ve got to focus on changing that. Some of our best volunteers come from the County court referral system. And that means we get volunteers who are A. Our visitors are about 8% Latino.

It also includes reflections from the exhibit team on the project. First, they replaced staff with volunteers--some entirely spontaneous--at the advice booth. The NYC-based group Improv Everywhere conducts elaborate and somewhat uncomfortable public “scenes” (such as people streaming onto a subway car with no pants), fueled by volunteers who feel exhilarated by the opportunity to act strange in a socially supported, somewhat safe way. The most well-known example is Wikipedia , a user-generated encyclopedia which boasts over 6 million entries written and edited by about 30,000 volunteer participants. I don't know if that was their original plan or a reaction to our poor use of the wiki, but it certainly didn't reflect our supposed digital chops.

One of his students reflected: Using the interactive iPad book to test my own reliability in crime scenes and investigations was really powerful. The Innocence Project is a tremendously participatory project, with hundreds of volunteers around the country. Our hope is that this book engenders even more active participation.
