I'm cranking away on a grant proposal, when suddenly, a classical rendition of "All the Single Ladies" wafts up the stairs. This is the participatory museum, played out loud. It's late in the afternoon. In the office, colleagues lift their heads. "Is someone asks. Yup," another nods. This is the magic a piano in the lobby makes.

For example, a few months ago we had a couple approach us to propose a Pop-Up Tea Ceremony. A genuine enthusiasm for sharing their skills, building knowledge and developing relationships in the community even if they haven’t done it before. Their enthusiasm and commitment charmed us and aligned with our social bridging goals.

People who work with non-professionals on participatory projects often talk about finding "neutral" sites for meetings or meeting on their (the non-professionals') territory. We certainly did the latter but only learned about the importance of the former late in the process. Level the playing field or tip it in their favor.
