The design and feel of the place was different than any science center I''d ever experienced. A Community Science Workshop is a place for kids to tinker, make, and explore their world through science. In most cases, they''re not places where kids can go by themselves at all. I knew I could learn a lot from it. Geography is key.

We talked to visitors and made and placed cards for about half an hour. This might sound unlikely, but with the right instruction set and a kind of game piece or card to use as a prompt, I think it could work. The instruction becomes a kind of social object that gives people something to talk about. At least, that was the idea.

The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. Ensure that you as convenor are talking for a very small amount of the time--ideally just to frame, contextualize, provide clear instructions, and keep people moving. A little socializing and sugar can go a long way.

Instead of voting in place, visitors could be directed to vote by moving to one side of the room or another. After the results are up, the screen could instruct visitors to find someone in the room who voted differently from them, or just to ask their neighbor what they think about the issue and or the results.

The unconference got lots of locals "in the door" who otherwise hadn't considered the museum a useful or interesting place. For the Ontario Science Center and the Computer History Museum, this is presumably considered a positive since it positions the institutions as cool places for young adults to hang out. I don't think so.

In a straightforward way, Marilyn explains how her team developed a participatory project to improve engagement in a gallery with an awkward entry. In addition to the display board of recently completed sheets, we collected older sheets in two large binders for visitors to flip through, and placed one in the gallery and another at the table.

The convenors set up a lovely wiki and gave us specific instructions to answer research questions posed on a series of pages. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. After the conference, the wiki switched from being a participatory site to a useful record. On March 22, they released the wiki. over email.
