Early this month, I got the chance to hear legendary game designer Will Wright (Sim City) give a talk. In his talk, Wright said one thing that really stood out: Game players have a negotiated agency that is determined by how the game is designed. The more open, the more agency. Both games have a "gamespace" in which they are played.

While there are some criticisms of its consensus-based model for information-vetting, there's no doubt of its success as a collaborative knowledge-creation project. I didn't feel supported pursuing intrinsically motivated projects. I went to a project-based engineering college where I could set my own curriculum and graduated early. There are many parallels between free-choice learning and participatory design. We like designing the experience. I know the practical answers.
