Libraries for people who are blind or dyslexic are the primary source of accessible books in audio, large print or braille. But, some companies want to empty the library shelves and insist that only books that can’t be purchased are allowed to be stocked in such libraries. Bookshare was created under the Section 121 U.S.

However, as a technology, printed books come with serious challenges for some communities (like blind people) that technology can unlock. With a press of a virtual button, an ebook can be printed, displayed in large print (on a page or on a display), made into braille (on a page or on an electronic braille display), or read aloud as audio.

However, as the founder of the Bookshare online library, we have a great deal at stake in how the Treaty gets implemented. Ultimately, this community should have equal access to all of the books that are needed for education, employment and social inclusion. These are the digital locks that make it hard to copy digital content.

Bookshare and our other Access to Literacy initiatives, including the DIAGRAM Center and Route 66 Literacy, all made big strides this year through the significant dedication of the community that makes it all happen. Our new work in the coming years is based on a simple premise: Everything born digital should be born accessible.

Last night, we held our Digital Storytelling Challenge Awards Party here at TechSoup headquarters in San Francisco. We screened highlights from the more than 100 video, image, and GoldMail submissions and celebrated the great work nonprofits and libraries are doing to tell their unique and important stories.

My recommendation to the advocacy community is to continue to pursue a “yes-and” approach, as we have so far with the TVI and the Stakeholders’ Platform. A definition of formats that includes Braille, audio and digital text, but excludes large print and video. However, my suggestion is to pursue the U.S. Excludes video. •
