Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Why are teens over-represented in participatory projects? The first of these reasons is practical.

Blueprint is the story of a group of people who tried to create a Dutch Museum of National History (INNL). The early participatory projects are terrific. A team that was superb at relevant, audience-centered work outside the institution couldn't find a way to bring their fresh thinking inside. The media strategy is impressive.

Looking closer, I saw that each seat had its own handwritten label, telling the story of the Philadelphia cultural institution from which it originated. Temple Contemporary’s mission is to creatively re-imagine the social function of art through questions of local relevance and international significance. The question drives the work.

Other people submit questions they'd like to have answered by strangers. Mercedes and Zachary pick people randomly out of the database, call them, and ask a contributed question. And they made me appreciate them as superb facilitators as a particular kind of participatory experience: conversation with strangers.

However, by the end of the first week it was clear that the majority of our audience was hooked. As well as our existing audience, new visitors came just because they wanted to be part of it. This seems like an appropriate time to share the story. My story is more a case of "Getting Hired: It's What You Want, How Aggressive You Are, and What Ideas You Can Offer." I learned to appreciate the audience reach of a big institution while vastly preferring the diversity of work and lack of bureaucracy of a small one.
