Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Teens are developmentally focused on social identity-building and may feel more compelled to share their voices and express themselves than others than other visitors.

But I’d been scribbling notes for an art museum label post for awhile, and then yesterday, the NY Times had a review of a new show at MOMA, Comic Abstraction. The collection is disaggregated, grouped by floor (Painting and Sculpture 1) rather than artist, movement, time period, or geography. MOMA has standard art museum labels.

If new programs are sufficiently different from the traditional ones, they may be more effective as standalone program tracks than as gateways to the traditional experience. This "parallel" strategy even applies to experiments in new forms of gallery interpretation. It's the easiest way to get new experiments started.

Three examples: In the late 1980s, the Brooklyn Children's Museum created an exhibit called Send a Letter to Snoopy. As Kathy McLean noted in Visitor Voices in Museum Exhibitions , while staff were afraid that typing on the typewriter would be too hard for some young children, "kids lined up to carefully and slowly type their letters."

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. It is multi-disciplinary, incorporates diverse voices from our community, and provides interactive and participatory opportunities for visitor involvement. This month, we opened a new exhibition at the MAH, Lost Childhoods: Voices of Santa Cruz County Foster Youth and Foster Youth Museum (brief video clip from opening night here ). Then, we worked with one of the commissioned exhibition artists, Melody Overstreet, to create an artwork that weaves all these little things into one tapestry.
