The new building was designed to meet neighborhood needs--not just in the content covered, but in the inclusion of spaces made for particular kinds of activities sought by locals (i.e. She did several things over the course of the tour to make it participatory, and she did so in a natural, delightful way. Instead of writing a post and soliciting comments (my typical approach), I used an online polling tool to create a simple game where you could read short provocations about questionable revenue sources and give each source an ethical thumbs-up or down. 20 people commented on it. A small percentage comment on it.

Every day when I walk by our visitor comment board, I feel like I'm getting little gifts from visitors. Some institutions have even banked on that charm to create compelling ad campaigns featuring visitors' comments. The comments provide me with some mental uplift, and they inspire me to keep pushing.

Please add your own ideas in the comments too. The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. Include a mix of individual activities (often writing or drawing), partner/small group work, and whole group discussion. Use unorthodox activities to inspire fresh thinking.
