As I drop 5 cent tokens into my slots of choice, I often wonder: could my museum be on this list? They are successful with audiences who already believe in the intrinsic power of art or the role art plays in civic engagement, but it's unclear how helpful they are to the people who aren't attending, participating, or supporting.

As Peter wrote: If someone enjoys Arts Event A because it’s social, informal, energetic, fun, and hip, why should we expect her to also enjoy Arts Event B if B is individual, formal, quiet, serious, and traditional (at least in its presentation, if not artistically)? In 2024, postcards with QR codes designed to make an impact (LOL funny, powerful quotes, beautiful art, photography, etc.) Get back to your roots and find your voice on social media. 2024 is an election year and social media is going to get even more ugly.

This is a problem specific to open-ended projects. No one would contest the idea that most museum exhibitions, art shows, films, books, in short, most content experiences, have value both for the new and return user. Most visitor-generated museum experiences are about creating, not curating, content. Why not museums?

It made me think in ways that I haven't before about the relation of art--as expressive culture--to democracy. It is multi-disciplinary, incorporates diverse voices from our community, and provides interactive and participatory opportunities for visitor involvement.
