Facebook has a diversified object model--for some people, friend updates are the essential object, for others, it's virtual gifts. There are many different models, including The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History , The New York Met , SF Mobile Museum , and even a Pop Up Prison Museum. People certainly have diverse views and relationships to museums, but I found that most of our collaborators were excited to partner with a museum because it validated their project or object.

It is crucial that LAMs be considered public civic spaces, but Oldenburg's model leaves a lot to be desired. When everybody knows what your institution is for (collecting and interpreting the past of your region, for instance) then we have common ground on which to build social relationships.
