The primary need, obviously, in our community, West Oakland, is a lack of access to healthy and affordable foods. These are a lot more of the sort of peripheral aspects of this problem.

I think at the national level we're always going to have The New York Times , CNN, and The Washington Post to do national investigations, but what we really are threatened to lose in the next year to five years is local investigations and local reporting. Locally, we run a project called the Technology Empowerment Project of Oakland. The idea of building capacity, particularly in an economic climate that is harsh, is a huge challenge for us.

The three Bay Area municipalities, along with Oakland and San Francisco (who haven't placed their orders yet) have all signed-on to be part of Plug-In Bay Area, an initiative to put more plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road. In October the City of Berkeley soft ordered 40 plug-ins and in December the city of Alameda soft ordered 98.

The homicide rate, as people are probably aware of, has just really increased in the last few years in Oakland, where I live. So we started in our small apartment in Oakland, it was about 750 square feet.
