A museum experience I’ll always remember: In 2002, I worked at the Boston Museum of Science with a program in which high school students from a nearby charter school spent half their school time at the museum. They took regular classes, museum-specific classes, and had internship-style museum jobs. Plus, malls are cool.

The people were of all ages--moms with babies strapped to their fronts, six year-olds using skillsaws, pre-teens building robots, teenagers doing homework. Over 30% of our staff statewide are either former Workshop students or parent volunteers. There was a spirit of conviviality and purpose and helpfulness and Spanglish in the air.

Last weekend I went to a great house party/fundraiser for Art in Action camp , a 10-day cultural boot camp for budding teen activists. Most of the participants are between the ages of 17-25, working class and youth of color. All afternoon the students remained in lockdown inside the school. Pretty groovy, huh?
