CiviCRM has 4 basic components: CiviContribute, CiviMail, CiviMember, and CiviEvents – which allow you to track contacts, donations, members, send out email blasts, have event registration, etc. It can integrate with both Drupal or Joomla, and there is a new stand-alone version as well.

Next, we designed a simple template for the testing sessions, consisting of six basic tasks for the users to try to complete -- i.e. “Find a Drupal Developer”, or “Find NTEN Members near you” -- in about 15 minutes. One feature I liked was that Pathable has an API for creating accounts, so I was able to roll that into our conference registration on our drupal site, and it populated their Pathable account with their organization, blog url, delicious url, flickr url, twitter url, etc (if they had added that to their drupal profile on NMC’s site).

Gender is not a standard field in Salesforce.com contact records, so if you want to add your own, you can customize it however you’d like. There was a very interesting and lively discussion about the gender field in Drupal profiles. Of course, one can always customize these things in Drupal.

There are a lot of free and relatively easy to use resources out there - Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, etc. Id also like to add the importance of being Googleable - having a Web site with fresh content that users (and, therefore, search engines) like. But again, you need to be at or near the top of Google when folks are searching for you.
